Having access to medical marijuana can be highly beneficial for people with certain medical conditions. However, once you obtain your medical marijuana card, you will have to seek medical marijuana card renewal periodically. Take a look at a few of the most common questions about medical marijuana certification renewal.

How often do you have to renew your medical marijuana card?

The frequency of medical marijuana certification renewal varies by state. Most states require patients to renew their certification every few years, but some allow for longer durations. Whatever state you live in, be sure to keep a close eye on when a renewal is required. If your certification is set to expire before too long, you may have to go through the full application process again.

How much does it cost to renew your medical marijuana card?

The fee schedules for medical marijuana certification renewal vary from state to state, and the price differences can be pretty significant. For example, in the state of Arizona, patients have to pay $150 to renew their medical marijuana card. However, in the state of Colorado, you only have to pay $29.50 for a renewal. Keep in mind, in most states, patients that qualify for certain state-level benefits may qualify for a reduced renewal fee cost.

Do you have to renew your card if you move to a new state?

If you move to a new state as a medical marijuana cardholder, you will not likely be able to use your card to purchase cannabis in the new state. With medical marijuana, each state makes its own legislation and has its own program. Some states don't even have legal medical cannabis. Further, it is illegal to carry cannabis across state lines in most cases. Therefore, if you live in a state that has a medical marijuana program, you will have to apply to be a patient and go through the process that the state requires to be approved.

How long does it take for a medical marijuana certification renewal?

If you are simply renewing a card that is getting ready to expire or expired recently, you can typically complete the process online within a few short minutes. Depending on our state, you will go to the available portal for cardholders, log in, submit your renewal information, and then pay your renewal fees. As soon as the application is submitted, your identifying registration number as a patient will likely be invalidated. You may have to wait for a new card to be sent to you in the mail, but some states allow you to print an updated verification page to use at dispensaries until you get your new card.
